"To many, she was an icon, to others, she was an inspiration, to me, she was my mother and all of the above" she said.
Until her death, Akunyili was an international pharmacist, a pharmacologist, an erudite scholar, a seasoned administrator and a visionary leader, who gained international recognition and won hundreds of awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights.
She was a senior lecturer and consultant pharmacologist in the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (U.N.N), Enugu Campus, before she became the NAFDAC boss in 2001.
Proff. Akunyili served as the Hon. Minister of information and communication for the federal republic of Nigeria from 2008 to 2010. She later ventured into partisan politics and ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance (A.P.G.A) in 2011 but lost to Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (A.C.N)
Her last official assignment was at the National Conference where she was a delegate representing Anambra state. She died in an Indian hospital in the early hours of June 7th, 2014 after a two year battle with cancer.
