Mahershala Ali outshines the competition at the 89th Acadamy Awards, winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a kind-hearted drug dealer in Moonlight.
This win makes Ali, the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar, a particularly notable achievement in 2017 when the White House has placed travel restrictions on individuals from several Muslim-majority nations. The win also makes Ali the fifth black actor to achieve a Supporting Actor Oscar

Accepting the Award from last year's Best Supporting Actress winner, Alicia Vikander, the new father, began his acceptance speech by buttoning his jacket, joking.....
"My grandmother would want me to button up"
At the end of his speech, Ali thank his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, who just gave birth to their first child, noting that she was "in her third trimester during award season, and we just had a daughter four days ago. I just want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process and really carrying me through it"
