As a former OAP, there are some people in the industry, particularly in Nigeria that I loved and listen to whenever I have the opportunity, Oluwatosin Abisona Bucknor was one of them.
Tosyn, as she was fondly called, was not only a radio host, she was also a brilliant writer, actress, musician and activist who was simply ahead of her time.....She was amazing. SHE WAS THE VOICE OF LAGOS.
But all of that came to a halt last Monday when the ever-so-lovely and soft spoken 37-year old succumbed to complications from sickle cell disease. According to reports, her Australian husband, Aurelien Boyer returned home from work on Monday night only to be confronted with the lifeless body of his wife at their Lekki home. Her death shocked everyone who knew her and everyone whoever had the opportunity to hear her speak.
Until her death, she worked as a on air personality with Inspirational FM. She hosted The Lunchtime Show with Angie Francis where she engaged big names guest in the entertainment industry. Bucknor also hosted the daily pop culture show 4PM in Lagos as well as The Good Citizen Radio Show, which addressed civic engagements
Interestingly, only days before her death, she penned down a well lettered untitled poem which clearly shows that the lovely young lady may have seen this coming. She felt it close. She predicted her own death. Yes, she was that special (But some folks are saying....nahhh, she did it!).
See more after the jump!!!
In the poem, the respected radio personality, aka Area Mama, aka Hottest, urged her friends and family to not cry for her when she's gone but to shed the tears for themselves. She went on to say that she feels no fear for death and that's why she lived her life the way that she did....Wow!!!
While family and friends awaits autopsy results, an online news site NaijaGists.com is reporting that the 37-year old took her own life and her family is covering it up. The site is suggesting that Tosyn had, had enough of the excruciating pains that comes with sickle cell crisis and decided to pen down her poem and proceeded to overdosed on her pain killer to end it all. Read It HERE:
Tosyn Bucknor’s untitled poem reads:
“I look into the future and see me cease
I feel no fear, my face won’t even cease
My steps on this earth, a testament to life
Leaving this place filled with strife
Don’t cry for me, shed tears for yourself
For each date you acquire gives you a little less.
Now I know why I live the way I do
Any why my mistakes, no second look
If i live my life according to their pace
What’s my price in life’s meaningless race?
Too much odds stacked against this fierce soul
So each hour, all I do is attain my goals
Spent alot of days searching for purpose
Then I put my thoughts into poetry and prose
This is why I was put in this world
Be a voice, Put emotions in words
For every tear I shed and times my eye smiled,
Someone will have known every option I tried.
This cowardly heart felt fear not death
Prize I’ve earned since my birth
My vow to leave a lasting voice after I was
Find a loyal number to keep fighting my cause
Here lies she who lived short but well
No regrets for her, but all her story tell”.
Radio will never be the same.
Oh lawdddd, either way, Tosyn dear, you lived your life on your own terms. We are not judging at all. We are talking about you and trying to make sense of everything. Yes, you did your thing. Your life may have been short but you lived it well and left a lasting voice like you wanted.
Journey well sweetheart. Only God can judge you. Continue to rest easy.....You will be missed.
