President Mujica gives 90% of his $12, 000 a month salary to charity. He lives in a one bedroom house where he grows chrysanthemums and drives himself to work in his old Volkswagen beetle....
President Mujica paid a courtesy visit to President Obama on Monday where he challenged Obama's policy on tobacco. Mujica whose Country, Uruguay became the first Country to legalize the production, sale and consumption of marijuana has serious problem with Cigarettes and big tobacco. Speaking through an interpreter, Mujica, an old smoker said.....
"But in the world, per year, eight million people are dying from smoking. And that is more than World War 1, World War 2...that is murder"
Uruguay is currently being sued by Phillip Morris for $2 Billion, claiming that the Country's strict anti-tobacco laws forces the cigarette makers to cover 80% of it's packets with graphic warnings and that it violates their intellectual property rights....Current law prohibits smoking in all closed places as well. Speaking about the law suit, President Mujica said....
Both Presidents also spoke about Guantanamo bay. Obama had requested Mujica about two weeks ago to take in five prisoners from the detention center which President Mujica had accepted.
"I was imprisoned for many years and I know how it is" said Mujica .
He was jailed for 14 years under Uruguay military dictatorship....."They are coming as refugees and there will be a place for them in Uruguay if they want to bring their families"
Majica who also encourages bilingual education didn't hold back on commenting on Obama's appearance either......"The first thing he said to me is that my hair has become much grayer"....Obama said.
Mujica is definitely the president Obama wants to be. God bless them both.....R O B!!!
