The 2016 Grammys "in memoriam" segment didn't leave out nearly as many big names as past ceremonies have done. But the awards show's annual tribute to celebrities who died still suffered some criticism on Monday night.
Artists who passed away in the past year included David Bowie, The Eagles' Glenn Frey, Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, Motor-head frontman Lemmy Kilmister, B.B. King, Lesley Gore, Ben E. King, DJ Big Kap, Three Dog Night singer Cory Wells, Percy Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire member Maurice White, Jefferson Airplane members Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson, R&B singer Natalie Cole and YES founding member Chris Squire. The Grammy Awards also recognized Céline Dion's husband, manager and producer René Angélil, and "Titanic" film composer James Horner.
Lady Gaga performed a tribute to Bowie, along with Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp's supergroup) for Lemmy, Jackson Browne and Eagles members for Frey, and Chris Stapleton with Bonnie Raitt and Gary Clark Jr. for King.
Natalie Cole, who won nine Grammys in her career, was featured prominently at the end of the "in memoriam" tribute, with a clip from her "Unforgettable" duet with her father, Nat "King Cole." However, she did not get her own musical tribute during the awards show, prompting outrage from her family.
See more after the jump!!!
"Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister... She deserves more than (to be a part of) a minute-and-a-half tribute."
Cole's son Robert Adam Yancy added that it was "shameless the way they minimized her legacy."
I see the family's point. I really think the Grammys should have done a little more to celebrate her life. I stand to be corrected but she was the first black female to ever win a Grammy and that i believe was in 1976, Yes! "She deserves more than (to be a part of) a minute-and-a-half tribute."
The organizers need to cover their faces in shame for being so disrespectful to the memory of this great singer and a major influence in the music industry. Ms Cole was a musical legend and ought to have been treated as such......A public apology to her family is in order...#JustSaying!
